Our Bells*

We have eight bells, and the largest weighs 26 cwt. They were all cast by Taylors in 1886 at a time when the foundry was making great progress in tuning and installation, and are hung between oak beams in a metal “A” frame at the base of the spire. The bells were rehung and fitted with ball bearings in 1933. They are the heaviest eight on the Island (indeed, in the whole of the W&P Guild), although some (notably the 5th) have a reputation as being odd struck. Visiting Us

Ryde is the main passenger hub for the Island with frequent catamaran and hovercraft services from Portsmouth and Southsea respectively. Journey times for the hovercraft are approximately 15 minutes and the catamaran about 20 minutes.

If coming over by car, Wightlink operate a frequent car ferry service from Portsmouth Gunwharf and also from Lymington to Yarmouth. Red Funnel operate hourly car ferry services from Southampton to East Cowes. There is a passenger link on this route which terminates at West Cowes but is more problematic in getting transport to the east Wight area.

Portsmouth Harbour Station is the link for the catamaran to Ryde. A train will transport you down the pier to the esplanade, or if you prefer you can walk the half mile or so, where it joins up with Southern Vectis bus service links to all parts of the Island. The hovercraft lands near the bus station also.

If catching one of the frequent busses to All Saints you will need the No. 9 Newport bus or No. 4 East Cowes bus. The bus stop is right outside the church – you can’t miss us! If staying for a few days without a car we recommend you purchase Rover tickets as they will be a lot less expensive to see more of our beautiful Island.

If you decide to walk up the hill to the church it will take about 20 minutes. You need to turn to your right as you leave the Esplanade Station, cross the road and walk up Union Street (about a 300ft hike, so breathing apparatus needed if you’re used to living somewhere flat!), join the High Street at the top and turn right at John Street, you can see the church as you turn the corner. Lots of coffee shops, pubs and eateries if you need to recover on the way!

You will note that Islanders refer to the Isle of Wight as ‘the Island’ – because, to us, there is no other island!

Car parking is available in the church car park on Queens Road at the west end of the church, on one of the main Ryde-Newport routes. To park in the church car park it will be necessary to enter your vehicle registration number(s) on a terminal either in the church or bell tower soon after you arrive otherwise fines may be imposed by the company operating the car park.

Learning to ring at Ryde

We can always accommodate people who want to learn to ring – the young people we teach keep going off to the mainland for University and better job prospects so we always need replacements! Our training programme has also been a great success with some mature learners recently. Contact Paul Robinson if you want to discuss learning to ring. We welcome ringers of all faiths or none.
