Might, Mites and Mitres.
A living city of all ages turned out to join the call of ages past in welcoming the 98th Bishop of Winchester, the Right Reverend Philip Mounstephen. Although bare winter trees could offer no canopy above the procession, the mighty cathedral bells spread their tapestry of summons across all souls beneath their certain and steadfast ceremony of sound.
Tradition demands that a new bishop must start his progress to the cathedral from the church of Saint Lawrence in the Square of Winchester. After an introduction to the mayor and city officials, the prayerful party directed themselves towards that soaring stone statement of faith, the cathedral itself.
In keeping with the laws of the game, a bishop must move in diagonals to reach the resting place of kings and queens. And so it was that the new bishop in humble dress followed the backs of his grander guides across the angled path to his seat.
All the while the unifying pulse of the bells orchestrated their footsteps and faded as the great cathedral organ blared out a salute through opened doors into the clear winter air. Tradition, fixed in countless smart phone videos, will play to infinity as the resonance of living bells dissolves into the blur of moments. Job done. History rung forward.
